Enhanced Oil Recovery
Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) is a method of producing oil that changes the oil properties to make it more mobile in the reservoir. Typically, primary and secondary production technology can produce 20-40% of the “original oil in place” (OOIP). If a field is complaint to EOR an additional 5-20% can be recovered. EOR is a mature technology and is widely applied around the world.
Benefits of Enhanced Oil Recovery:
Carbon dioxide, nitrogen and fire floods are used in order to apply Enhance Oil Recovery (EOR). The basic difference is a fire flood injects air while nitrogen floods and carbon dioxide floods inject near pure nitrogen and carbon dioxide. The decision for utilizing a specific component for EOR is dependent on several factors, such as availability, type of field, etc.
The main benefit of EOR is additional revenue from sale of produced oil. Other benefits include the following:
-
Tax benefits in case of utilizing carbon dioxide instead of venting it into the air
-
The ability to gain carbon credits by taking carbon dioxide from nearby CO2 producing industies
-
The increased value of underground oil resources which can only be exploited via EOR
